Two-Dimensional Electronic Spectroscopy: A Comprehensive Spectroscopic Tool for Excited State Dynamics

2D electronic spectroscopy has become a widely exploited tool to study excited state dynamics because of the high density of information enclosed in 2D spectra. However, many issues can affect or limit the use of this powerful technique. We developed 2DES in both BOXCARS and Pump-Probe geometries to overcome main issues and to extend the versatility of this spectroscopy. A further crucial challenge is to objectively disentangle all the features of the third order optical signal. Time-frequency transforms and global analysis methods are suitable approaches to unravel all features of the signal in a fast and robust way. Applications of such spectroscopic and analysis techniques can range from the study of quantum coherences, vibrations, solvent and environmental effects, energy and charge transfer. Indeed, it has been successfully exploited to explore correlated fluctuations in excitonic states coherences in molecular J-aggregates, inertial relaxation and spectral diffusion in solvated molecules, intra-band and multiexciton relaxation in semiconductor quantum dots, carrier generation in gold nanoparticles and exciton relaxation paths in natural light-harvesting antennas.
