ERC Starting Grant Awarded to Prof Simon Wall
Starting Grant funding supports young researchers to establish themselves as independent research leaders.

The European Research Council (ERC) has announced today the awarding of its Starting Grants to 406 early-career researchers throughout Europe. The funding, worth €605 million in total and up to €1.5 million per grant, will enable them to set up their own research teams and pursue ground-breaking ideas. Recipients of this grant may be of any nationality with 2-7 years of experience since completion of PhD, with a scientific track record showing great promise and an excellent research proposal. The grants are awarded under the ’excellent science’ pillar of Horizon 2020, the EU’s research and innovation programme.
ICFO Professor Simon Wall, leader of the Ultrafast Optical Dynamics of Solids research group, was awarded a European Research Council Starting Grant in this call to pursue the project “Probing nanoscale and femtosecond fluctuations in high temperature superconductors (SeeSuper)”. This projects aims to adopt a new approach to study high temperature superconductivity, the spectacular quantum phenomena that enables materials to conduct electricity without resistance. SeeSuper will attempt to understand the origins of high temperature by examining how they vibrate on ultrafast (10-15 s) and nano (10-9 m) time and length scales.
The European Commission established the ERC ten years ago with the mission to encourage excellence in frontier research across Europe through competitive funding, supporting top researchers across all fields and of any nationality. Prof. Wall’s grant is the tenth Starting Grant to be awarded to an ICFO researcher to date, bringing ICFO’s ERC grant total to 26 (10 Staring Grants, 4 Consolidator grants, 5 Advanced Grants and 7 Proof of Concepts Grants).
