New ICFOnians

Thirty-two new ICFOnians joined the different ICFO research groups, units and facilities during the months of October and November. Welcome aboard!

Two visiting scientists, Johanna Figueroa and Saleh Rahimi, thirteen postdocs, Aamir Ali, Allan Johnson, Bruno Paulillo, Hanan Herzig Sheinfux , Iacopo Torre, Irénée Frérot ,Kasra Amini, Manish Verma, Mohammad Mehboudi, Sebastian Etcheverry, Seyoon Kim , Veronica Vicuña and Xiaobo Lu, two research engineers, Anahi Higuera and Daniel Fernandez, nine Ph.D. students, Berkay Bozok, Catarina Ferreira, Chung-Yun Hsieh, Eduardo Dias, Montserrat Alvarez, Sergi Julia, Stefano Severino, Vittorio di Pietro and Xinyao Liu, five students, Adrian Gomez, Ainoa Guinart, Alvaro Ortega, Gerard Valenti and Pilar Pujol, and one member of management, Nicolas Schulthess, have joined ICFO in the months of October and November.

 

Johanna Figueroa, who obtained her 2016 PhD in Physics at Universidad de Concepcion – Chile, and is now a postdoc researcher there, is coming to ICFO to join the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Antonio Acín as a visiting scientist. She will work in understanding how to implement protocols developed in the group in their lab.

Saleh Rahimi, who holds a 2015 PhD in Physics, Quantum Optics and Quantum Information from the University of Queensland, Brisbane, Australia, is joining the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Antonio Acín as a visiting scientist. His stay will involve working on classical simulation of quantum processes.

Aamir Ali, who holds a 2017 PhD in Material Chemistry at Allama Iqbal Open University, Islamabad Pakistan, has joined the Low-Dimensional Quantum Materials research group led by ICFO Prof. Dmitri Efetov as a postdoctoral researcher.

Allan Johnson holds a 2017 PhD in Physics from Imperial College London, and now is joining the Ultrafast Optical Dynamics of Solids research group led by ICFO Prof. Simon Wall as a postdoctoral researcher. During his stay at ICFO, he will be conducting research on non-linear optical spectroscopy of correlated materials.

Bruno Paulillo, who holds a PhD in Physics, from the University of Paris-Sud, Orsay (France), is joining the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will be working on the use of optical surfaces including metals and 2-D materials.

Hanan Herzig Sheinfux, who holds a PhD in Physics, from the Israel Institute of Technology, is now joining the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a postdoctoral researcher.

Iacopo Torre, who obtained a 2017 PhD in Physics at Scuola Normale Superiore, Pisa, Italy, is now joining the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will focusing on topological nanophotonics.

Irénée Frérot, who graduated with a 2017 PhD in Physics at Laboratoire de Physique de l’ENS de Lyon, France, is joining the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a postdoctoral fellow. His main tasks will be to research on ultracoild atoms and quantum simulators.

Kasra Amini, who obtained his 2017 PhD in Physical and Theoretical Chemistry at University of Oxford - UK, is coming to ICFO to join the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will be working on molecular imaging.

Manish Verma, who obtained his 2015 PhD in Physics from the Indian Institute of Technology Delhi, India, is coming to ICFO to join the Medical Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Turgut Durduran as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will be working on a tinyDCS project to develop a prototype. 

Mohammad Mehboudi obtained his 2017 PhD in Physics from Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona and now he is joining the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Antonio Acín as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will be working on the use of quantum information concepts to understand thermodynamic processes and open system dynamics. 

Sebastian Etcheverry, who holds a 2017 PhD in Applied Physics from the KTH Royal Institute of Technology and Rise Acreo AB, Stockholm, Sweden, has joined the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, he will be studying materials and devices for sensing. 1514

Seyoon Kim, who obtained a PhD in Electrical Engineering, California Institute of Technology (US), is now joining the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a postdoctoral researcher.

Veronica Vicuña, who holds a 2017 PhD in Material Science & Engineering from Autonomous National University of Mexico, Mexico City, is joining the Quantum Engineering of Light research group led by ICFO Prof. Juan P. Torres as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, she will be working on experimental generation and detection of new types of quantum entangled states for probing and sensing.

Xiaobo Lu, who holds a PhD in Condensed Matter Physics from the Chinese Academy of Sciences (CN), has joined the Low-Dimensional Quantum Materials research group led by ICFO Prof. Dmitri Efetov as a postdoctoral researcher. During his time at ICFO, he will be conducting research on topological nanophotonics.

Anahi Higuera, who obtained her 2017 MSc in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from KU Leuven and Université Grenoble Alpes, is now joining the Plasmon Nano-Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Romain Quidant as a research engineer. At ICFO, she will be working on the LCHIP project.

Daniel Fernandez, who obtained a 2016 MSc in Telecommunications from the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, is now joining the Medical Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Turgut Durduran as a research engineer. At ICFO, he will be developing FPGA programming, digital electronics and control software.

Berkay Bozok, who graduated with a MSc from Bilkent University in Electrical and Electronics Engineering in 2017, is now joining the Plasmon Nano-Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Romain Quidant as a PhD student. At ICFO, he will be carrying out his doctoral studies on ultra sensitive on-a-chip biosensing based on nano-optical resonators.

Catarina Ferreira, who obtained a 2017 Master’s Degree in Applied Physics at Universidade do Minho, Portugal, has joined the Organic Nanostructured Photovoltaics research group led by ICFO Prof. Jordi Martorell as a PhD student. At ICFO, she will be centering his PhD studies on nanostructured surfaces for tactile displays.

Chung-Yun Hsieh, with a 2016 Master degree in Physics from the National Tsing Hua University (NTHU), China, has joined the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Antonio Acín as a PhD student. 1496

Eduardo Dias, who obtained a 2016 Master’s Degree in Fundamental Physics, at the University of Minho (UM), Portugal, has joined the Nanophotonics Theory group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Javier García de Abajo as a PhD student. At ICFO, he will focus his research in different aspects of nanophotonics theory.

Montserrat Alvarez, who has a 2017 MSc in Physics by National Autonomus University of Mexico, is joining the Molecular Nanophotonics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Niek van Hulst as a PhD student. At ICFO, she will be doing research on nanoscale control of molecule-antenna coupling.

Sergi Julia, who obtained in 2017 an MSc at the Institute für Quantenoptik und Quanteninformation (IQOQI) and Institut für Theoretische Physik (ITP), Austria, has joined the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstien as a PhD student. During his thesis, he will be doing research on quantum thermodynamics and and quantum batteries and engines.

Stefano Severino, who graduated with an MSc in Physics in 2017 at University of Naples, Italy, is joining the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a PhD student. His thesis will be focused on attosecond soft X-rays.

Vittorio di Pietro, who obtained his 2016 MSc in civil and indutrial engineering at the Università degli studi di Roma, Italy, has joined the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a PhD student.

Xinyao Liu, who holds a 2017 MSc degree in Large-Scale Facilities from Paris-Sud University, France, has joined the Attoscience and Ultrafast Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Jens Biegert as a PhD student. At ICFO he will be working LIED.

Adrian Gomez, who is pursuing an BSc in Chemistry in the Universitat de Barcelona, has joined the SLN Facility led ICFO Prof. Pablo Loza as a student. At ICFO, he will conduct research on quantum memories with cold atoms.

Ainoa Guinart, who is pursuing a BSc in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, has joined the Plasmon Nano-Optics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Romain Quidant as a student. At ICFO, she will focus on chip detection of exosomes. 

Alvaro Ortega, who is pursuing a BSc in Mathematics and Engineering Physics at the UPC, is joining the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Antonio Acín as a student.

Gerard Valenti, who is pursuing a BIST - UPF Master of Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences, is joining the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a student.

Pilar Pujol, who is pursuing an MSc in Photonics at the UPC, has joined the Nonlinear Optical Phenomena research group led by ICFO Prof. Lluis Torner as a student. At ICFO, she will conduct research on numerical and experimental methods for the realization and analysis of bulk and surface wave supported by in hyperbolic waveguides and surfaces.

Nicolas Schulthess is joining ICFO administration as a program manager. Nicolas will mainly handle the management of North-American financing projects, specifically NIH. In this framework, he will review the current policies and regulations in this area and will collaborate with the appropriate ICFO units to establish what is necessary. It will support the Group Leaders to prepare and present NIH proposals and assume management in case of concession.
