May 04, 2018
Two visiting scientists, Esteban Gerbino and Ravindra Chhajlany, one postdoc, Marta Dies, two PhD students, Marc Torrent and Karuppasamy Soundarapandian, one visiting PhD student, Anurag Behera, and eleven students, Salim Benadouda, Varun Pusapati, Heitor DaSilva, Manon Ballu, Willemijn Remmerswaal, Adrien Lecornu, Adrian Nogales, Anna Bartomeu, Xavier Valcarce, Celine van Valkenhoef and Guillem Guigo, have joined ICFO in the month of April.

Esteban Gerbino, who holds a PhD in Biological Sciences from the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (Argentina), is coming to ICFO as a visiting scientist at the SLN facility in ICFO prof. Pablo Loza’s group. At ICFO he will be working on understanding the production of iron sulphate salt in lactic bacteria.

Ravindra Chhajlany, who obtained a 2008 PhD at the Adam Mickiewicz University, Poland, is coming to ICFO to join the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a visiting scientist, to work on the theory for the joint project with Simon Wall and the QOT group on transient superconductivity.

Marta Dies, with a 2015 PhD in Physics, Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya, Barcelona, has joined the Neurophotonics and Mechanical Systems Biology research group led by ICFO Prof. Michael Krieg as a postdoctoral researcher. At ICFO, she will work on establish a model of mechanosensation on short timescales using principles from systems biology.

Marc Torrent is now joining the SLN facility in ICFO Prof. Stefan Wieser’s group as a research engineer. His main tasks will be to develop a microconfiner for squeezing cells/tissue based on piezo/pressure driven glass-glass confinement device and 45 tilted micromirror devices and optimized lattice light sheets.

Karuppasamy Soundarapandian, with an MSc in Nanoscience and Nanotechnology from the University of Glasgow, United Kingdom, is now joining the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a PhD student to work on device fabrication for graphene flagship and nano-optoelectronics group.

Salim Benadouda, who is pursuing an MSc in Photonics from UPC, UB, UAB and ICFO, is joining the Nonlinear Optical Phenomena research group led by ICFO Prof. Lluis Torner as a student.

Varun Pusapati, who is pursuing a Master of Science in Optics and Photonics at Karlsruhe Institute Of Technology, is joining the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a student to work on graphene plasmonics and photodetection.

Heitor da Silva, who is pursuing a Physics MSc from the Universidade Federal de Itajubá (Brazil), has joined the Quantum Optics Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maciej Lewenstein as a student. He will work on quantum simulations.

Manon Ballu, who is pursuing a Master in Physics, École normale supérieure Paris-Saclay, is joining the Ultracold Quantum Gases research group led by ICFO Prof. Leticia Tarruell as a student to work on developments for a high-resolution imaging system for liquid droplets in mixtures of Bose-Einstein condensates.

Willemijn Remmerswaal, who is pursuing a Master Applied Physics, Eindhoven University of Technology, is joining the Quantum Nano-Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Frank Koppens as a student to work on interferometric graphene photodetector.

Adrien Lecornu, who is pursuing a Master Physical Engineering and Electronics, ENSICAEN (Ecole Normale Superieure d’Ingenieurs de Caen), is joining the Optoelectronics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Valerio Pruneri as a student. He will work on the development of an image cytometer, integration and software.

Adrian Nogales, who is pursuing a Master of Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences - UPF & BIST, has joined the Single Molecule Biophotonics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maria García-Parajo as a student. He will work on super-resolution imaging and advanced image analysis of UNR organization and association with other membrane organelle compartments.

Anna Bartomeu, who is pursuing a Master of Multidisciplinary Research in Experimental Sciences - UPF & BIST, is joining the Single Molecule Biophotonics research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Maria García-Parajo as a student. She will work on performing super-resolution microscopy and image analysis of the CPEB family of proteins involved in autism.

Xavier Valcarce, who is pursuing a Master in Subatomic Physics, Claude Bernard University, Lyon, France, is joining the Quantum Information Theory research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Antonio Acin as a student. He will study machine learning protocols to understand quantum causal networks.

Celine van Valkenhoef, who is pursuing a Masters in Photonics, UPC, UB, UAB and ICFO, has joined the Quantum Photonics with Solids and Atoms research group led by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Hugues de Riedmatten as a student. She will work towards cavity-enhanced detection of single ions in the solid-state.
