ICFO in “Optics in 2006”

OPN highlights ICFO research in the Optics in the Year special annual edition

February 03, 2007
The work of the optical parametrical oscillator (OPO) group
at ICFO, led by Professor Majid Ebrahim-Zadeh is featured in the Special Edition of the Optics and Photonics News (OPN) magazine devoted to “Optics in 2006”. The development of the first femtosecond OPO covering the entire visible range, as well as the UV spectrum, is highlighted as one of the most exciting advances in Ultrafast Optics in 2006.

OPN also highlights research carried out by the nonlinear optical phenomena group, by Professor Lluis Torner and Dr Yaroslav Kartashov, in collaboration with researchers from several outstanding centres based in Australia, Chile, Mexico, and Germany. This work is about nonlinear Tamm states in periodic photonic structures, a new type of optical surface waves.

Optics in 2006 is a special issue that highlights the most exciting research to emerge in the preceding 12 months in the fast-paced world of optics. The areas covered in 2006 included array detectors, Bloch oscillators, coherent imaging, diffractive optics, imaging, metamaterials, nonlinear optics, optical beams, opto-mechanics, polarization, Raman spectroscopy, soft X-rays and ultrafast science.
