GEFES 2019 Best Theoretical Thesis in Condensed Matter Physics

Renwen Yu awarded for thesis “Toward next-generation nanophotonic devices”

December 12, 2019

GEFES, the Condensed Matter Physics Division of the Spanish Royal Physics Society, has awarded Dr. Renwen Yu the prize for the best theoretical doctoral thesis in Condensed Matter Physics out of all theses defended between August 2018 and July 2019. His thesis entitled “Toward next-generation nanophotonic devices” was supervised by ICREA Prof. at ICFO Dr. Javier Garcia de Abajo, and was defended at ICFO on July 11, 2019.

Dr. Renwen Yu’s doctoral thesis focuses on studying and understanding the control of light-matter interaction at nanometric scales. It is a topic of great interest for the design of efficient and compact small-scale photonic devices, with applications in fields as diverse as energy production, communications and biomedicine. Likewise, his research has repercussions on fundamental aspects of the interaction between light (photons), electrons and crystalline networks (phonons). In his thesis, Dr. Yu aims to investigate new operating ranges and practical designs at a fundamental level of light-matter interaction in graphene-based devices - the two-dimensional layer of carbon atoms -, with immense potential for a broad range of promising technological applications.

Congratulations Renwen!
